Sam Houston Gravesite
The East Texas Weekend Preview — On the border of East Texas, there lies a captivating cemetery that houses the remains of arguably the most famous historical figure in the whole timeline of the Lone Star State.
Long before Texas was an actual state in the U.S.A., the territory belonged to the nation of Mexico. Seeking independence, Texians formed their very own Declaration of Independence in March of 1836. War would ensue throughout the entirety of the year, leading up to the climax at the Battle of San Jacinto. At its end, Mexico would surrender the region on May 14th.
You may ask, “Who led the charge during this whole ordeal?” Why, that would be Sam Houston of course!
Houston’s legacy is legendary, even before his move to Texas. Beloved by the Cherokee Nation, solider during the War of 1812, Governor of Tennessee in the 1820’s. Yet, Texans will always remember him as the champion for the region’s independence, in which he became its first president before the later move to American statehood.
Today, you can visit his actual gravesite within the Oakwood Cemetery in Huntsville, TX. His memorial features an absolutely breathtaking engraved portrait that displays his boldness and leadership atop a steed.

There are many plaques to read, that include tidbits of his accomplishments before and after war.
Visitors can even get a larger-than-life view of Sam Houston by visiting his popular, 67ft statue just down the road!
This weekend, pay respects to the man who helped shape our beloved Texas into what we know it as today.
