The East Texas Weekend Preview — At one point in time, Greenville had the largest inland cotton compress on the entire planet!

With thousands of bales of cotton being produced each day, this Hunt County community became a huge hub for the product throughout the region.

Today, you can get an up-close experience of what this industry was like in its heyday. The Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum is home to a wide variety of memorabilia and equipment centered on the area’s cotton legacy.

As you stroll the center section of the building, you can admire historic, agricultural equipment like a genuine cotton gin and the engine of the giant, famous cotton compress.

Inside the glass booths, view a variety of cotton products that were made in the 1800’s, such as pantalettes, gowns and pajamas from the time period.

As you tour the museum, you will also find loads of treasures from Greenville and Hunt County’s heritage! Some of the coolest displays include personal items from famous, middleweight boxer Reecy Davis and clothing from the Shields Giants, a group of brothers that stood well above 7ft tall each and toured the world as a circus act.

Also, as the name of the museum suggests, they have an incredible display of America’s Most Decorated Solider, Audie Murphy. His exhibits can be found in the Hall of Heroes.

This weekend, discover all of the endeavors and people that shaped Greenville, TX!
