Before the turn of the 20th century, many pioneers were beginning to claim their spots around Northeast Texas.
One community that blossomed in the 1890’s was that of Bug Tussle. (Yes, that’s its real name.)
You’re probably wondering, “How did they get that name?”
Well, we are right there with you. It is somewhat unclear on the exact reason, but there are a few ideas and legends.
Our favorite story is that the rural land didn’t offer much entertainment, leading to locals finding enjoyment in watching bugs tussle it out against each other.

Another account comes from residents discussing on what to name the town, then noticing two beetles battling on the ground nearby.
Today, all that pretty much remains of this old East Texas town is the well-worn general store.
Over the years, this destination has become a popular photo op for folks looking to snag a picture of the rustic history of the region.
This weekend, while you are exploring fun spots in Paris or fossil hunting in Ladonia, make a pitstop to the East Texas town with the funniest name.
