#10 - Southwest Dairy Museum (Sulphur Springs)

Explore 10,000sqft of exhibits that tell the story of the local milk and dairy industry. Here at the Southwest Dairy Museum, you and the family can discover a wide range of displays that highlight the early days of life on the farm to how milk products are processed. Visitors can enjoy a variety of engaging pieces, such as the most interesting exhibit, the milking cow experience. This interactive display allows you to get an understanding of the process by attaching an apparatus to a fake cow.

If you’re unaware, the East Texas town of Grand Saline gets its name from the rich veins of sodium that line the underground caverns beneath the community. For ages now, this precious mineral has been mined and distributed throughout the world! The Salt Palace Museum, in the heart of downtown, harnesses the incredible history of how this precious resource shaped the lives of those who live here.

#8 - East Texas Oil Museum (Kilgore)

From driving our vehicles to providing electricity to our homes, this “Black Gold” is used to power up most things in our society today. The East Texas Oil Museum captures the great lasting impact that oil had when it was discovered here in the Piney Woods nearly a century ago. Be sure to take a ride on their elevator to the center of the Earth!

Since the late 1800’s, the trees that blanket the East Texas terrain have been harvested and repurposed to create the majority of local townships that we are familiar with today. The Texas Forestry Museum, in Lufkin, preserves the tools, methods, and most importantly, the personal stories that made this monumental endeavor possible. From world-shaping military history to the commonality of commercial airlines, all the way to the Moon Landing, this East Texas museum holds the stories and artifacts that highlight these great American triumphs. Admire lots of retro items like real Air Force bomber jackets, pieces of scrapped propellers and memorabilia from famous pilots like Amelia Earhart. #3 - Museum of Measurement and Time (Jefferson)

For over 60yrs, Johnny and Edith Ingram have collected items that spark happiness and showcase lifelong passions. As the name of the museum states, here you will find a massive variety of beautiful clocks, historic land surveying tools, and even a wonderful collection of salt & pepper shakers from past generations. Throughout this free-to-visit destination are walls filled with ticking machines of all shapes, sizes and origins. We guarantee you will find a clock that will totally surprise you!

#2 - Northeast Texas Rural Heritage Museum (Pittsburg)

Carroll Shelby, Lonnie “Bo” Pilgrim and the Ezekiel Airship. Pittsburg, TX is home to many world-renowned entrepreneurs, inventors and a truly powerful sense of community. The Northeast Texas Rural Heritage Museum, located in downtown, tells the many stories of those who influenced this beautiful portion of the state, and beyond!

#1 - Patricia Huffman Smith NASA Museum (Hemphill)

East Texas changed forever on the morning of February 1st, 2003. During a scheduled landing operation, Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated over the piney woods. Littering debris all around the region. Aboard were 7 brave astronauts. Rick Husband, Willie McCool, David Brown, Kalpana Chawla, Michael Anderson, Laurel Clark, and Ilan Ramon. None of which survived. Today, you can visit this East Texas museum that captures the entirety of the story and the event’s lasting impact.
