The East Texas Weekend Preview — There is no place on Earth quite like Caddo Lake.
The iconic bald cypress tress with their swaying Spanish moss. Hundreds of unique species of birds, fish and reptiles. And loads of mysterious lore that adds to the pure magic of the region.
To truly experience this special body of water, you absolutely must set sail by kayak or canoe!
Embark on the many designated paddling trails around the lake that offer a true look at the awesome glory of the Caddo. The Cathedral and Turtle Shell trails are a couple of popular pathways that take you deep within the beautiful, swamp-like terrain.
Our journey began with a smooth launch from the Johnson’s Ranch Marina. (Which happens to be the oldest inland marina in the entire state!) We totally recommend beginning your paddling adventure here, as you can access many trails immediately and even rent a kayak or canoe. Plus! You can check out the famous abandoned speakeasy that’s right across the water!

During our trip we kayaked portions of both the Cathedral and Turtle Shell, and what an unforgettable experience it was. There are many times during your trek that you will enter hallway-like paths of towering trees. The glassy, still water and the natural sound buffer creates a serene setting like no other. The feeling is other-worldly, as you witness the sights and sounds of all the creatures that call this place home.
Lilly pads the size of car tires, brightly-colored herons hunting for small fish and long drapes of Spanish moss flowing in the breeze populated every portion of the trails that we got to kayak.
With miles upon miles to explore, you can easily take on as much as you desire. Each trail is designated with “paddle” signage to help you stay on track.
